Cables for Temperature Sensors

Cables (leads) for temperature sensors are available in a wide range of insulation combinations. Each combination has its own characteristic properties (resistances), which need to be matched to the character of the environment in which the lead will be used when making a selection.

Mineral-Insulated Metal-Sheathed Cables

Mineral-insulated metal-sheathed cables are also known as “sheath material” or, colloquially, “MIMS cable”. The metal sheath offers very good mechanical and thermal resistance and effectively protects the inner conductors from the potentially harmful effects of the measured medium.

MIMS cables are most commonly used to manufacture thermocouple and resistance temperature sensors.

Uninsulated Wires

Uninsulated wires are uninsulated thermocouple wires of the relevant polarities. By welding them together, a thermocouple of the required length can be created. This is then used as the measuring element in a range of thermocouple temperature sensor designs.
