The measuring principle is based on sensing the rotational speed of a turbine placed in the flowing measured medium. The turbine's rotation is directly proportional to the flow velocity of the measured medium and is largely independent of its density, pressure, and temperature. Turbine anemometers can be used for measurements in both gases and liquids.

The measuring method is based on measuring the frequency of the so-called Kármán vortices, which are formed as a flowing gas passes around a body. The frequency of these vortices is directly proportional to the average flow velocity of the measured gas.

The basis of the thermal flow sensor is an electrically heated and mechanically protected sensing element located at the measuring end of the sensor. Based on the heat transfer between this sensing element and the measured gas, the standard (converted, normalized) flow velocity, standard (converted, normalized) volumetric flow rate, or mass flow rate of the measured medium is calculated.
